Morning prayers at Enchey
Reach Enchey before the sightseeing taxis and sit at the back of the prayer hall while the monks chant with drums and horns. An hour that shows Gangtok's oldest monastic site as a working religious house, not a photo stop.

Take a taxi up from MG Marg at about 6:45 am, or walk if you are already acclimatised. The town is quiet at this hour, the ridge smells of pine and woodsmoke, and you are likely to share the courtyard only with a few local people turning the prayer wheels. Walk once round the building clockwise before going in, which is what the regular visitors do.
Leave your shoes at the door and sit on the floor or a bench at the back. Prayers may last most of an hour, with chanting led by a senior monk, the deep note of the long horns and the clash of cymbals at set points. Young monks serve butter tea to the assembly. Do not walk between the monks and the altar, and keep your phone silent and in your pocket.
When the prayers end, take time with the murals: the four guardian kings by the entrance and the deities on the side walls. If a monk is free and willing, a short question about the Nyingma school or the coming Chaam is usually welcome. Leave a small offering in the donation box if you wish.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
What time are morning prayers at Enchey Monastery?
Morning prayers usually begin around 7 am and can run close to an hour, but times shift with the ritual calendar and the season. We suggest arriving by 7 am and asking at the door. On festival days the timetable changes entirely, so check current status before you travel.
Can tourists sit inside during prayers at Enchey?
Usually yes, if you are quiet and respectful. Remove shoes, sit at the back, keep feet pointing away from the altar and do not photograph without clear permission. If a monk indicates that the hall is closed for a ritual, wait outside; there is plenty to see in the courtyard.
How do we get to Enchey early in the morning?
Ask your hotel to book a local taxi the evening before; a one-way ride from MG Marg costs about ₹200–300. Fit walkers can climb the 3 km in about 50–60 minutes. Shared taxis are scarce before 8 am, so do not rely on them for an early start.
