Watching the Detor Chaam at Enchey

Each winter Enchey's monks perform the Detor Chaam, two days of masked dances in the courtyard before the Tibetan new year. Gangtok families come in their best clothes; visitors are welcome to watch from the edges.

Chaam is a ritual dance of Tibetan Buddhism, performed by monks to destroy obstacles and negative forces before the new year. At Enchey it falls on the 18th and 19th days of the 12th month of the Tibetan calendar, which usually means January or February. The dancers wear brocade robes and painted masks of protector deities, including Mahakala, and move slowly to drums, cymbals and long horns. Jesters slip in between the solemn dances and make the crowd laugh.

Arrive by 9 am to find a place on the steps or along the courtyard wall. The dances go on with breaks through the day, and the second day usually builds to the main ritual. Bring water, a snack, a cushion and a warm layer, since winter mornings at 1,860 m start cold even in sunshine.

Stay behind the rope or the line the monks indicate, never step into the dance ground, and avoid flash. Local families bring children and elders and often sit in the same place each year, so be ready to squeeze up. Dates move with the lunar calendar every year; we confirm them in December, and you should check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

When is the Enchey Monastery Chaam in 2027?

The Detor Chaam falls on the 18th and 19th days of the 12th Tibetan month, which usually lands in January or February. The exact Gregorian dates change every year with the lunar calendar and are announced locally. We confirm them each December; check current status before you travel.

Can we photograph the Chaam at Enchey?

Photography of the dances in the open courtyard is generally tolerated, but use no flash, stay behind the rope and never step into the dance ground for a better angle. Some moments of the ritual may be off limits; follow instructions from the monks and volunteers at once.

Is the Enchey Chaam crowded?

It draws a large local crowd, especially on the second day and at weekends, but it is far smaller than big-city festivals. Arrive by 9 am for a step to sit on. Families with small children should pick a spot near the exit, and seniors should bring a folding stool or cushion.
