Farmhouse homestays in Lingtam, a warm village at about 1,400 m just above Rongli, where cardamom, maize and vegetables grow around the houses. The lowest and softest start to a Silk Route trip.
Lingtam is the first village on the climb from Rongli towards Zuluk, and it still feels like a farming place: terraces of maize and vegetables, cardamom under the trees, cows in the yard. Several families host guests in simple rooms and cook from their own fields when they can.
Because Lingtam is low and mild, it works as a first night for travellers arriving late from Siliguri or Bagdogra, leaving the higher villages for the next day when you are fresh. It sits on the permit side of Rongli, so Indian nationals need the Silk Route permit arranged via Rongli. Check current status before you travel.
Why we book it
What it does well
- Mild weather and an easy first night after the plains
- Farm food grown around the house
- Short drive to Rongli for permits and supplies

Questions travellers ask
Questions about Lingtam village homestays
How far is Lingtam from Rongli?
About 8–10 km, which takes 30–40 minutes on the climbing road towards Padamchen and Zuluk. Many travellers pick up permits in Rongli in the morning and are at their Lingtam homestay by lunch, or use Lingtam as a late-arrival stop after a long drive from Siliguri. Road works can slow this stretch; check current status before you travel.
Is Lingtam cold?
Not very. At about 1,400 m Lingtam is mild most of the year: shirtsleeves on spring afternoons, a light jacket in the evening, and around 5–10 °C on winter nights. It is the warmest night you will have on the Silk Route, which is why we suggest it for families with young children before going higher.
Can we walk around Lingtam village?
Yes. Lanes run between houses and fields, and your hosts can point you to a short walk to the river or through the cardamom. Ask before photographing people or entering fields, and stay on paths during the monsoon when leeches are out. A walk of an hour or two before dinner is the best way to see village life here.
