Ravangla to Maenam summit in a day
The classic full-day trek: about 4 hours up through oak, rhododendron and bamboo forest to the 3,263 m summit of Maenam, with Kangchenjunga on the skyline, then 3 hours back down. Steep, rewarding and best on a clear autumn day.
The trail leaves from above Ravangla at about 2,100 m and climbs steadily, gaining more than 1,100 m. The lower forest is oak and chestnut, busy with birds. Higher up, rhododendron, magnolia and fir take over, with stands of bamboo near the ridge. The path is clear but steep, often rooty and muddy in places.
Near the top the forest opens and, if the day is clear, the view is enormous: Kangchenjunga, Pandim and the peaks of West Sikkim to the north, the Tendong ridge to the south, Ravangla and Buddha Park far below. A small gompa stands on the ridge. Eat lunch, rest and keep warm.
Descend the same way in about 3 hours, or cross to Borong (see the next experience). A local guide is essential: side paths branch, and mist can close in fast. Carry plenty of water, snacks, a rain jacket and a warm layer. Fit walkers manage it comfortably; first-timers should be honest about their fitness.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
How difficult is the Maenam trek?
Moderate to strenuous. You gain over 1,100 m to about 3,263 m in roughly 4 hours, on a steep forest trail. Regular walkers in decent shape manage it; beginners may find the climb hard. The altitude is moderate, but go slowly and drink water.
Do we need a guide for Maenam?
Yes, we strongly recommend one. The trail has side paths, mist is common and it is a protected sanctuary where staying on route matters. Local guides from Ravangla charge about ₹1,500–2,500 a day and know the forest, birds and plants.
Is there a permit or entry fee for Maenam?
As a wildlife sanctuary, Maenam may require registration and a small entry fee through the forest department. Your guide will handle this. Rules change, so check current status before you travel. Foreigners need their Sikkim RAP.
