Downhill walk from Sombaria to Daramdin

Walk about 7 km down the road and village short-cuts from Sombaria to Daramdin, losing roughly 550 m through farms and the village of Ambotey. An easy half-morning on foot that shows the farming country most visitors only see from a jeep window.

From Sombaria at about 1,500 m, the road to Daramdin drops roughly 550 m over about 7 km. Village short-cuts cut off several bends, and a local can point them out. On the way you pass Ambotey, which Wikipedia describes as a village between Daramdin and Sombaria with several schools, so you will meet children on the path in term time. The farms change as you descend, from cardamom and vegetables to maize, paddy and orange trees.

Most people take two to two and a half hours at an easy pace. Downhill walking is hard on knees, so use a walking pole if you have one, and wear shoes with grip, as the short-cuts are steep and slippery after rain. Traffic on the road is light but drivers move fast on bends; walk facing traffic and step well off the road when vehicles pass.

Arrange for your car to meet you in Daramdin, or catch a shared jeep onward to Jorethang or Soreng; a pick-up costs about ₹600–900. October to April is best. From June to September the short-cuts are muddy and leech-ridden, and we would stick to the road or skip the walk. Carry water; there are small shops in Ambotey and Daramdin.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

How long is the walk from Sombaria to Daramdin?

About 7 km by road, less with village short-cuts, dropping roughly 550 m. Most walkers take two to two and a half hours at an easy pace. It is all downhill, so it suits most fit adults, though steep sections are hard on the knees.

Do I need a guide for the Sombaria to Daramdin walk?

Not if you stay on the road. A local guide, or a shopkeeper's directions, helps you find the short-cuts through the villages, which are quieter and more interesting. If you use them, ask before crossing fields and keep to the paths.

Can children do this walk?

Yes, children used to walking can manage it with breaks, but watch them closely on the road bends and on steep short-cuts. Arrange a car to collect you in Daramdin, carry water and snacks, and avoid the monsoon months, when paths are slippery.
