How to make the trip

Shared jeep

1–1.5 h · ≈ ₹80–150 a seat

Shared jeeps leave the Jorethang stand for Soreng through the day, most often in the morning, and leave when full. Buy your seat at the counter or from the driver. Luggage goes on the roof under a tarpaulin, so pack valuables in a day bag. The last jeeps up leave in the mid to late afternoon.

Private car

1 h · ≈ ₹1,500–2,000 one way

A reserved small car from Jorethang takes about an hour. It lets you stop at Tharpu for the Mangardzong site, or carry on to Sribadam, Kaluk or Rinchenpong the same day. Agree the fare and any stops before you set off; prices rise in April, May and the October holidays.

From Siliguri / NJP

4–5 h · ≈ ₹4,500–6,000 small car; jeep ≈ ₹250–350 to Jorethang

The district gives Soreng as about 100 km from Siliguri and 115 km from NJP. The road follows NH10 along the Teesta to Melli, then the Rangeet to Jorethang. NH10 closes after monsoon landslides, when drivers go via Kalimpong or Darjeeling. A few shared jeeps run Siliguri–Soreng direct in the morning. Check current status before you travel.

Fares are indicative. Landslides, snow and check-post timings change journeys: check current status before you travel.

Our tip

Leave Jorethang before noon: shared jeeps thin out in the afternoon, and you want daylight for the climb.
