Early bird walk around Kabi forest
A slow early walk along the highway edge and forest tracks near Kabi Lungchok. The surrounding subtropical hill forest is recorded as home to many bird species, so patient visitors with binoculars can expect good birdsong and, with luck, some sightings.

Wikipedia's article on Kabi Lungchok, citing the ENVIS Centre for Sikkim, lists birds recorded in the area, including the crested serpent eagle, rufous-necked hornbill, Ward's trogon and black-breasted parrotbill. We do not promise any of them. Several are shy or rare, but the forest is real, and a patient morning walk can turn up common hill birds and an occasional surprise.
Start at first light, when the highway is quiet. Walk along the verges and listen before looking: much of the forest is heard rather than seen. Binoculars help. A local guide knows the calls, and your driver may know the best stretches. Stay on tracks and away from the road's outer edge, where traffic and slides are risks.
Mid-March to May and October to November are the more pleasant months. In the monsoon the roads are risky and leeches are common. Carry water, a rain jacket and shoes with grip. Check current status before you travel, and do not play recorded calls to attract birds.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Which birds can I see near Kabi Lungchok?
Wikipedia's article, citing ENVIS Sikkim, lists the pariah kite, crested serpent eagle, rufous-necked hornbill, chestnut-breasted partridge, black-breasted parrotbill, grey-crowned prinia and Ward's trogon. Sightings are never guaranteed and some are rare. Expect common hill birds on an ordinary morning. A guide improves your odds.
Do I need a permit to bird-watch here?
No protected area permit is needed for Indian visitors at Kabi Lungchok, which is below the protected areas. Foreign nationals need their Sikkim restricted area permit, applied online since January 2026. Rules can change, so check current status before you travel.
Is it safe to walk along the highway?
Walk only where there is a verge, keep to the inner side and listen for vehicles, as the North Sikkim Highway is a working road with blind bends. Avoid the walk in heavy rain, when slides are common. Do not step into the forest off the track alone, and tell your driver where you are going.
