Saga Dawa in short

Saga Dawa marks the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing into parinirvana, celebrated on the full moon of the 4th Tibetan month, in May or June. In Gangtok, monks and devotees usually carry holy scriptures in a procession through the town, and the monasteries fill with butter lamps.

Saga Dawa is the holiest month of the Tibetan Buddhist year, and its full moon, the 15th day of the 4th month, commemorates three events in the life of the Buddha: his birth, his enlightenment and his passing. It corresponds to Vesak, celebrated across the Buddhist world, and in Sikkim it is a state holiday. Many families eat vegetarian food for the day or the month and make extra offerings and donations.

In Gangtok, the day usually brings a procession in which monks, accompanied by musicians and lay devotees, carry volumes of the scriptures through the streets of the town, and monasteries such as Enchey and the Tsuklakhang see a steady stream of visitors lighting butter lamps and turning prayer wheels. The atmosphere is devotional and calm rather than festive in the carnival sense.

Dates follow the lunar calendar and vary from year to year, usually falling in late May or June. Pre-monsoon showers are common by then, and haze often hides Kangchenjunga. Check current status before you travel, and ask us for the confirmed date and procession timing.

If you go

Tips for the day

  • Watch the procession from the roadside and step aside for the monks; do not cut through it.
  • Visit Enchey or the Do Drul Chorten in the evening to see butter lamps being lit.
  • Carry a light raincoat; Saga Dawa often falls with the first pre-monsoon showers.

Questions travellers ask

Questions about Saga Dawa

When is Saga Dawa in Sikkim?

Saga Dawa falls on the full moon of the 4th Tibetan month, usually in late May or June. The exact date changes every year with the lunar calendar and appears on Sikkim's government holiday list once announced. Check current status before you travel, and ask us for the confirmed date.

What happens on Saga Dawa in Gangtok?

Monks and devotees usually carry holy scriptures in a procession through the town, accompanied by music, and the monasteries see many visitors lighting butter lamps and making offerings. Many Buddhist families eat vegetarian food on the day. It is a devotional day and a state holiday in Sikkim.

Is Saga Dawa the same as Buddha Purnima?

They mark the same occasion. Saga Dawa Düchen, on the full moon of the 4th Tibetan month, commemorates the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing, as Vesak and Buddha Purnima do elsewhere. Because Tibetan and Indian lunar calendars differ slightly, the dates do not always coincide.

Can tourists join the Saga Dawa procession?

Visitors are welcome to watch respectfully from the roadside. Do not walk into or across the procession, keep a respectful distance from the monks carrying scriptures, and ask before photographing people at prayer. At monasteries, follow the usual etiquette: shoes off, walk clockwise and keep your voice low.
