Leave Gangtok at about 8:30 am for Rumtek, an hour away via Ranipool. Carry photo ID for the security gate. Spend an hour at the main hall and Golden Stupa, then continue down the road to Martam, where a family we know serves lunch of home-grown rice, dal, greens and pickles, paid directly to the hosts.
In the afternoon drive on to Sang, about 30–45 minutes, for the 1912 Karma Dubgyu Chokhorling monastery and its stones bearing Phaya Lama's prints. Have tea at a stall in the bazaar and walk a little among the fields before heading back. You return to Gangtok by early evening.
A reserved small car for the day costs about ₹3,000–4,000 in 2026, and lunch about ₹400–700 per person. If the day feels long, split it: Rumtek and Martam on the way to a homestay night, and Sang the next morning before driving back.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Can we do Rumtek, Martam and Sang in one day from Gangtok?
Yes, with a reserved car and an early start. Allow about nine hours: an hour each way to Rumtek, time at the monastery, lunch in Martam and the drive to Sang and back. A night in a Martam homestay makes the day more relaxed.
How much does a Rumtek–Martam–Sang day cost?
Indicatively, about ₹3,000–4,000 for a small car for the day in 2026, plus about ₹400–700 per person for a homestay lunch and small offerings at the monasteries. Prices rise slightly in peak weeks. Check current rates before you travel. Pay homestay hosts in cash.
Is the road to Sang good?
It is a narrow, mostly paved hill road with some rough stretches, slow in places and slower after rain. Drive times of 1.5–2 hours from Gangtok are realistic. In the monsoon, landslides can block it briefly, so check current status before you travel.
