Lingdum and Rumtek in one half day
Cross the valley from Gangtok for Sikkim's two great Kagyu monasteries in one trip: Rumtek, seat of the Karma Kagyu in exile, and Lingdum, the young Zurmang Kagyu monastery in the Ranka forest. A classic half day with a reserved car.

Leave Gangtok around 9 am and go first to Rumtek, about 24 km and an hour away via Ranipool. Carry original photo ID for the security gate. Spend an hour in the main hall, rebuilt by the 16th Karmapa and inaugurated in 1966, and at the Golden Stupa that holds his relics. If you have time, ask the driver to stop at Old Rumtek, the original monastery below.
From Rumtek, drive across the slopes to Lingdum near Ranka, about 45 minutes to an hour, timed to arrive for the afternoon prayers. The contrast is the point: Rumtek is busy, guarded and historic; Lingdum is new, open and quiet. Both belong to the broad Kagyu school, but to different branches.
Return to Gangtok by about 5 pm, stopping at Banjhakri Falls if the family wants a break. A reserved small car for the loop costs about ₹2,500–3,500 in 2026. Lunch at a simple eatery near Rumtek costs about ₹150–250 per person.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Can we visit Rumtek and Lingdum on the same day?
Yes, easily. They lie on the same side of the valley, about 45 minutes to an hour apart by road. A half day of 4–5 hours with a reserved car covers both comfortably. Visit Rumtek in the morning and Lingdum in the afternoon for the prayers.
How much does a Rumtek and Lingdum taxi cost?
Indicatively, about ₹2,500–3,500 for a small car in 2026 for the half-day loop, with waiting time. Adding Banjhakri Falls or Old Rumtek may add a few hundred rupees. Agree the stops before you leave, and check current rates before you travel.
Which is better, Rumtek or Lingdum?
They are different. Rumtek is historic and important as the Karmapa's seat in exile, with the Golden Stupa, but busier and guarded. Lingdum is newer, more spacious and quieter. If you have time, see both; if only one, choose Rumtek for history and Lingdum for calm.
