Tsomgo, Baba Mandir and Nathu La in a day
The full high-road day from Gangtok: Tsomgo Lake at 3,753 m, Nathu La at 4,310 m and the Baba Harbhajan Singh shrine, back by late afternoon. How to order the stops, pace the altitude and avoid the common mistakes.

Hand your ID and photos to your agent by midday the day before. Leave Gangtok around 7 am, after a light breakfast. The drive to Tsomgo takes about two hours with the permit check. Many drivers go straight up to Nathu La first, to reach the border before cloud and wind build, and then stop at Baba Mandir and Tsomgo on the way down.
That order also helps with the altitude: you spend the least time at the highest point and descend steadily through the afternoon. At Nathu La keep to 30–45 minutes. At Baba Mandir, around 4,000 m, take tea and visit the shrine. At Tsomgo, walk slowly by the lake before the last two hours back to Gangtok.
A reserved SUV costs about ₹6,500–9,000. Carry water, snacks, warm layers, sunglasses and cash. If anyone develops a severe headache, vomiting or confusion, descend at once. Nathu La is for Indian nationals only and usually closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
How long does the Tsomgo, Nathu La and Baba Mandir trip take?
Allow 7–9 hours from Gangtok, leaving around 7 am and returning by about 3–5 pm. The time depends on traffic, the permit check, snow and how long you stay at each stop. It is a long day at altitude, so plan a quiet evening afterwards.
Which is better: Nathu La first or Tsomgo first?
Many drivers go to Nathu La first, to reach the border before afternoon cloud and wind, then visit Baba Mandir and Tsomgo on the way down. This also limits time at the highest point. Your driver will decide on the day based on permits, weather and traffic.
What if Nathu La is closed on our day?
If Nathu La is closed for snow or security, you can usually still visit Tsomgo and Baba Mandir on the same permit. The car fare is lower without Nathu La. If Nathu La matters to you, keep a spare Wednesday to Sunday in your plan.
