Rhododendron drive through Kyongnosla
In spring, the Tsomgo road through Kyongnosla becomes one of the easiest rhododendron drives in Sikkim, with red, pink and cream blooms between silver firs above about 3,000 m. Plan a private car so you can stop at the right places.

Sikkim has dozens of rhododendron species, and several grow along the Tsomgo road, from tree-sized species lower down to shrubs near the lake. From about mid-April to late May, depending on the year and the altitude, they flower in waves: lower slopes first, higher ones later. Kyongnosla's fir forest makes a dark backdrop for the colour.
A private car lets you stop at safe pull-outs and walk a few metres along the road. Do not climb the banks, pick flowers or break branches: the area is protected, and the slopes are loose. Early morning light is best, before cloud builds. On the way back down, the afternoon light can also be good.
Combine the drive with Tsomgo and Baba Mandir on the usual permit. If the high road is closed for snow, rhododendrons may still be visible lower down. Keep a spare day. For a longer rhododendron trip, look at Barsey in Soreng district or Yumthang and Shingba in North Sikkim.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
When do rhododendrons bloom on the Tsomgo road?
Usually from about mid-April to late May, starting lower and moving up the mountain. The exact timing shifts by a week or two with each year's weather. Early May is often a safe middle point. Check current status before you travel and ask us for recent reports.
Can we stop to photograph rhododendrons in Kyongnosla?
Yes, at safe pull-outs, with a private car. Shared tours rarely stop. Do not stop on blind bends, as Army convoys use the road, and do not climb the banks or pick flowers. Your driver knows the places where stopping is allowed.
Is Kyongnosla better than Yumthang for rhododendrons?
Yumthang and the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary in North Sikkim have larger and more famous displays, but need a two-night North Sikkim permit trip. Kyongnosla is easier, as it lies on the Tsomgo day trip from Gangtok. For a short trip, Kyongnosla is the practical choice.
