Hanuman Tok at an easy pace for seniors
How older travellers can enjoy Hanuman Tok without strain: a later start when the air is warmer, slow steps with rests, and the view from the lower terrace if the climb feels too much. Practical advice from our drivers.

Many of our guests in their sixties and seventies want to pray at Hanuman Tok. It is very doable with a little care. Go after breakfast, between 9 and 11 am, when the ridge is warmer than at dawn and the steps are dry. The car stops close to the bottom of the steps, so the walking is short.
Climb slowly, one step at a time, and rest at each landing. At about 2,200 m, the air has noticeably less oxygen than the plains, and breathlessness on stairs is normal. Drink water, avoid a heavy breakfast, and do not hurry because others are waiting. If a family member is unsteady, one person can take offerings to the shrine while the others enjoy the view from the lower level.
Those with heart or lung conditions should ask their doctor before travelling to Sikkim's higher points, and should visit Hanuman Tok only after a day or two in Gangtok. Carry regular medicines, and tell your driver if anyone feels dizzy, so you can descend at once.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
How many steps are there at Hanuman Tok?
There is a flight of steps from the parking area to the temple, which most visitors climb in five to ten minutes with rests. We do not quote an exact number because it varies with how you count landings and terraces. Take it slowly; the altitude makes it feel harder than it looks.
Is Hanuman Tok suitable for wheelchair users?
Not fully. The shrine is reached by steps, without a ramp as far as we know. Wheelchair users can enjoy the view from near the parking area, while a companion takes offerings to the temple. Call us before booking and we will describe current access.
Can altitude be a problem at Hanuman Tok?
Rarely, for a short visit. At about 2,200 m most people feel only mild breathlessness on the steps. Visit after at least one night in Gangtok, walk slowly and drink water. Anyone with heart or lung disease should take medical advice before the trip.
