MG Marg and Lal Bazaar food walk

A walk from the clean, car-free MG Marg down to Lal Bazaar, Gangtok's main market, tasting momos, thukpa, sel roti and churpi along the way. The best way to understand what Sikkim eats, and where its farmers bring their produce.

Start on MG Marg, the pedestrian promenade at the heart of Gangtok. It is closed to traffic, smoking and littering are banned, and it is one of the cleanest town centres in India. Cafés and small restaurants line both sides; most serve steamed or fried momos (pork, chicken or vegetable) and thukpa, a noodle soup that came over the passes from Tibet.

Walk downhill to Lal Bazaar, the Kanchenjunga Shopping Complex area, where farmers from the surrounding villages sell vegetables, spices, dried fish and dairy. On Sunday mornings the haat is at its busiest. Look for churpi: soft churpi, a fresh cheese made from buttermilk, is cooked into curries and chutneys, while hard churpi is dried over a fire until it can be chewed for hours.

Also look for gundruk (fermented, dried leafy greens), sinki (fermented radish), fiery dalle chillies and sel roti, the ring-shaped rice bread fried for festivals. Since 2016 Sikkim has been a fully organic state, and much of the produce here comes from small family farms. Finish with tea back on MG Marg.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

What is churpi and where can we buy it in Gangtok?

Churpi (chhurpi) is cheese made from buttermilk. The soft kind is cooked into curries and pickles; the hard kind is dried and smoked into small blocks that you chew slowly, sometimes for hours. Buy it at Lal Bazaar, where farmers and shopkeepers sell both kinds. Hard churpi packs well as a gift.

Is MG Marg vegetarian-friendly?

Yes. Almost every restaurant offers vegetable momos, veg thukpa, dal-rice thalis and paneer dishes, and several are entirely vegetarian. Ask for 'veg' clearly, as some broths are meat-based. Sikkimese vegetarian dishes worth trying include gundruk soup, local greens, squash shoots and soft churpi curry.

When is the Lal Bazaar haat?

Lal Bazaar operates daily, but the weekly haat, when villagers bring produce into town, is busiest on Sunday mornings. Go between 8 and 11 am for the widest choice. It is crowded and steep in places, so wear good shoes and keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket.
