Evening lights of Gangtok from Ganesh Tok
Watch the sun set behind the western hills and the lights of Gangtok come on along the ridge below. A gentle hour after a day of sightseeing, best in the dry season when the air is clear.

Leave MG Marg about 40 minutes before sunset, roughly 4:30 pm in December and 5:45 pm in April. The light fades over the western ridges while the town below turns blue, then the street lights and windows come on in long lines down the hillside. It is one of the simplest pleasures in Gangtok.
Bring a jacket: the terrace is windy and at about 1,980 m it cools fast after sunset, often to 5–8 °C in winter. Photographers should carry a small tripod or rest the camera on the parapet for the low-light shots, and should look for the moment when the sky still holds some colour above the lit town.
The shrine may close earlier than the terrace, and evening access can vary, so ask your driver to check before you go. Head back down for dinner on MG Marg afterwards, about 20 minutes away.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Is Ganesh Tok open in the evening?
Usually until early evening, which allows a sunset visit, but hours vary with the season and local arrangements. Ask your hotel or driver to confirm on the day. Check current status before you travel, and plan to leave by about 7 pm.
Is Ganesh Tok safe after dark?
Yes, it is generally safe, but the steps are unlit in places and the ridge road is dark. Carry a phone torch, keep children close on the steps, and use a reserved taxi rather than walking back. Most visitors leave soon after the lights come on.
What should we wear for an evening at Ganesh Tok?
A warm jacket, even in April or October, since temperatures drop quickly after sunset at about 1,980 m. In December and January add a cap and gloves. Comfortable shoes with grip help on the steps, which can be damp. A torch helps on the way down.
